    *#*#7262626#*#* (you get mobile network information for both 2G and
    3G).
    or
    *#*#4636#*#* (you get phone and battery information).

    It didn't work also for Android 4.1.1 on Samsung GIIISLTE

    In the Google Play there is an app called NetMon really interesting.

    It shows the signal strength and the location of the BTS.
