3G Voice Quality Vs 2G Voice Quality

Voice quality is better on GSM or UMTS? And why?

Theoretically, voice quality on UMTS should be better than that on GSM. This is because UMTS uses AMR for all voice calls while GSM uses additional codecs which are inferior to AMR.

However, other factors come to play, like noise on your voice routes in the Core Network which can affect voice quality on 3G. But overall, 3G quality should be better than 2G.

What if we use AMR only in GSM as well while AMR in 3G??

Even then, the quality on the 3G should be better because of its better ability to cope with interference.
