I have attended quite a few trainings on 3G, most of the trainers happen to use 3G/WCDMA/UMTS interchangeably, is it right? or is there a difference. Help much appreciated.
As far as i know, 3G is an evolution of 2G. It promises increased bandwidth up to 384k Kbps (user at slow speed), 128 Kbps (user is in moving car), or 2Mbps (in fix application). UMTS is a Standard which created by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). WCDMA is an access technique.
GSM operators and ETSI agree to use WCDMA as access method to meet eG Spesification.
Like already said, 3G is next generation for 2G hence called as Third generation.
UMTS is standard and called as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System.
WCDMA is Wideband Code division multiple access...and rightly said an access technique. UMTS standard uses WCDMA for providing the third generation services.
