Every simple certification class I have done has never really netted me that much. I took CCNA and I would say it good knowledge. Not a bad Cert for interview. My HAM Radio License has helped in a few jobs. You will run across a few HAM Radio guys. I had one hiring manager from Nextel and that got me in. I have used it in my resume and it helps. Best certification is the G.R.O.L. (General Radio Operators License with Radar Endorsement.) I suggest http://www.w5yi.org/page.php?id=25
Good luck as it is tough. My other thoughts are try to be with positive people in whatever small job you find. You will find someone that will click with you when you show you have a high spirited interest. Your contacts from project to project are the lifeline to continue. Dedicate and work hard. However, Enjoy it. I truly enjoy what I do. I branch out to do jobs other than what I am hired to do. Currently, I added Beta testing of three different hardware and software projects. I love it, but it does take up my extra time that is not extra.
Also, train others on what you have learned. I have had a couple that passed my level of expertise and they have pulled me in on some kewl projects. I just had a call from a guy that I trained that knew nothing 10 years ago. He thought he would be let go from the project back then. Today, he called to say thanks for helping and believing in him. He works for ATT up in Detroit now and was contract for a few years there and made it to perm.
Be patient and take one step at a time. Best,
