if wimax operator feel the LTE going to be the dominant 4G technology, they can switch to TD-LTE (using wimax spectrum they hold) but its going to be a bit later than commercial FDD LTE. at least they already secure the spectrum. so start expand wimax coverage and when time come (IF YOU WANT TO SWITCH TO LTE) , just do it.
in term of RAN, it is quiet simple for migration. some extra work needed on CORE NETWORK as you have to install additional NE (SAE,etc).may require down time.

How about UT/MS? These need to be swapped as well, alternatively to support dual mode! The chipset is going to take time to become available.
