Ec/No and Eb/Io ??

Can any one describe the difference between Ec/No and Eb/Io? and If we have Ec/No provided, how can we deduct the Eb/Io??

As far as I understand it, in an ideal situation (no external noise etc) there should be no difference between Ec/No and Ec/Io.

My understanding is that Ec/No is Energy of the Chip / Noise. This noise can be noise created by the 3G cell itself as the traffic increases, external noise source, other 3G cells causing a noise increase (pilot pollution). While Ec/Io is the Energy of the Chip / the noise made by this cell only.

Simply speaking,
EcNo = is on the air, all spectrum is spread, so you can have negative value over total noise.
EbNo = is on the base band after despread, only 1 user is decoded so you will have positif value over total noise

Again Eb/No is vendor related parameters for different bearers (based on channel model).

where Ec/No is normally considered in pilot channel and constant value. (-15 ~ -18 dB)

In link budget calculation, both parameters are considered to find out MAPL.

Ec/Io is measured before despreading. Eb/No is measured after despreading and is very much a vendor related parameter. But, it can also vary based on environment (rural, urban... based on the delay spread) vehicular speed, diversity , application, use of power control , FEC...
