Well Dear I guess you cant be a planning engineer until you get into industry. Its just like you cant learn swimming until you get into water. However you should increase as much theoretical knowledge as possible; try to get an internship so that at time of interview your are highly impressive. Once you are in field it all depends on your passion for learning and there you go......

thats meaning i must work as drive test first before working as planning engineer

I guess, not only it. But it would be quite useful.
The idea is, if you havent't worked yet, you couldn't call youself specialist (RF or somebody else). Because, there are many things, that might not be in scope of very good book you could find.
So, my advice - read E******* recomendation, some courses about Cell planning (E******* might be the best). Try to imagine real situation - building new network, and try to calculate, all you can calculate..
But it onle prerequisite.. Next step - to get job of RF engineer in telecom company. Small company, that only beginning development is best one - you could get experience in wide branches. And last step, to work at least 2 years..
Work as drive tester (with analysis of course), in my opinion, is necessary .

mr_safwat !!
yes its fine even if you have to work as drive tester. Alternately try to get internship in RF planning. Whatever you get is fine. You need to learn quickly and convey your managers that u got some potential. once u r in you will automatically move from drive testing to RF planning or optimization(sooner or later). Rest I think you will get lots of theory and literature from this forum. Also for your learning you can get some radio tools. However I will emphasize to learn good Excel,Access, SQL as any potential employer needs them. VBA will also be very helpful as you will need theses skills in your work and at time of interview you will stand out from other candidates.

Just want to ask some opinion from the expert. Do you think it is hard to jump from opti to planning and also is it hard for engineers to apply for 3G jobs if he/she from 2G background? How many years of experience needed that you consider yourself good enough?

Thank you.

Hello there,

I am not an RF planning engineer, but I like to comment on learning Excel, Access, SQL.

Each one of these programs is a world by itself, so my advice to you is to start the easy way by learning Excel. It has wonderful handy tools to handle and process data, which you can quickly process your data.

For small, moderate amount of data Excel forms a good start.

SQL itself will give you a good push in the field of data processing. But if you are in a hurry, my advice to you is to start learning Access. It has a graphical interface for sql, which you can use to graphically build your queries.

Information processing is very important in telecom field, so I advice you to start step by step, and build on experience.

I can provide guidance if you need. I have good experience in Excel and SQL, and a little in Access.

:)
