the amount of baseband overhead being used when a UE is in soft handover scenario.

take an example UE in connection with two nodes(inter nodeb), that UE would be using baseband processing from both the nodes for channel processing. so this extra baseband processing is called overhead. though its an overhead but in ideal scenarios, it has more benefit for Maximum ratio combining.

To emphases on what was said before,

SHO overhead represents the increased resource usage caused by the soft/softer handover connections.

It basically depends on the SHO areas in the network. Create sharp cell borders, reduce pilot pollution and you improve the SHO overhead

Soft Handover Overhead is not a problem nor a goal to reach. It is an unavoidable side effect of the RF overlap between different Cells and the need for UE to connect and decode the signal from every sectors that is above a certain RCSP/ EcN0 level.


Typical Values are like 1.7 (Avg Active Set Size) or 35% (Secondary / Total )
