You can use DPI to:
- Know and monitor the customer usage per application type : eg.g VoIP, peer to peer, download, skype... This gives you statistics and trends of usage, useful for marketing.
- Do traffic management:
- prioritize or limit a given application by allowing a min or max guaranteed bandwidth,
- Manage application usage according to time of the day, e.g. allow some applications during off-peak of traffic hours and prevent it during peak hours
- Forbid a given application (e.g. VoIP or Skype)
- Filter some URLs, do parental control
- Fair usage policy per application
