ICS supports a lot of raster and vector data formats.

-Images Format supported: TARGA 8-16-24 bits, TIFF, JPEG , BIL, MRSID + others

-Elevation data supported:
DTED, SDTS, DEM, Planet Elevation, Alcatel ASC, GRD, SRTM, BIL, ESRI ASCII DEM + others

If you want to build a fresh building map, you can start with 2D vector data representing the building contours/ footprint then extrude using the building height, here you can use any GIS software (like ArcGIS, Mapinfo, etc..) then you can rasterize this vector layer and import back this layer into ICS Map server where you can merge/ Edit / clip etc...

Tools Needed:
1-ArcView 3.1 With 3d Analyst Extension (Installer is Attached PM for P@ss...)
2- ICS Mapserver


1- First We launch ArcView 3.1 and load 3D analyst by clicking on "File >> Extensions" and selecting 3d Analyst
2- Zoom to building View
3- Click on 'View' Menu >> New Theme >> Select Polygon
4- Select a filename >> OK
5- Use the "Draw Polygon" from the Drawing Bar and start drawing random buildings footprint.
6- Click on the left panel to select the new building layer we have just made
7- Click on "Theme" menu then on "Table"
8- Now click on "Table" menu then on "Start Editing" and assign a random height for each polygon, this number will be used to extrude the building to a certain Height
9- Now Click on "Table" Save edits
10-Now click on Layer again then on "Theme" >> "convert to 3D Shapefile"
11-Select 'Get Z value from attributes' to get the height you have just assigned for each building
12- Now load the new 3D Shapefile and click on "theme" >> Convert to Grid
13- Now load the new Grid file
14- Now select the new grid layer and click on file >> Export Data source and select ASCII raster
15- Launch ICS and click on "Import/Export" >> Import IC2 From >> ASCII Grid and you are done!

I saw a couple of ICS projects where buildngs are added to DEM layer using ICS Mapserver, I mean do not use .BLG for building and .IC2 for DEM, you can use ICS Mapserver and merge the building.ic2 and Heights.ic2 into one ic2 file. As you can see in the below image , I have the heights and buildings in one file that i can use in ICS telecom and get accurate Predications results but you need to have a high resolution DEM data for this to work (25, 20, 10 or higher).

We can use Mapinfo to replace Arcview but I use Vertical Mapper also

Install Vertical Mapper and load into Mapinfo from Mapinfo Menu "tools" >> "Tools Manager"
In Mapinfo Make a new Table (file >> New Table)
Add a height Field
Draw the buildings footprint
Click in 'Table' Menu >> Update Column
Assign a Height for each building
Click on ''Vertical Mapper" >> Create Grid >> Region To Grid
Select the source Table and the Height column
Now load the new grid file into Mapinfo
click on ''Vertical Mapper" >> "show Grid Manager"
Now click on "Tools" in "Grid Manager" then on Export
Select "ASCII Grid Export (.txt)
Now import the New TEXT into ICS Mapserver using Import IC2 from ASCII Grid

You can convert Asset Clutter bin file into Planet .GRC using ICS Mapserver but you need also Mapinfo and "Vertical Mapper". I'll show you how can this be done!

Add these extra files to ESRI folder, each in the appropriate directory (bin32, lib32, Ext32) then launch Arcview

Yes for sure, you can. Acrview supports JPG and TIFF.
you need to click on add theme icon on the bar then select "Image Data source" as the Data source types. If you have TIFF images you need to load the TIFF 6.0 Support Extension first.

Please note that if the image is not Geo-refrenced Arcview will load the image in an arbitrary location (Not the Exact Location), you need a .JGW world file that will tell arcview where to place the image and what coordinate system transformation. If you need to Geo-reference and produce the associated World file you need at least 4 known points with known Coordinates. You can use Blue Marble Desktop application to do this job.

I appreciate your knowledge and help, In x-wizard my 600+ files has been converted in to single clutter and elevation file, but unfortunately the procedure which you defined for PLANET converts 1 bin file in to 1 .grd file. So if i try to convert the the complete bin files of my country then it is obviously large data and too many .grd files. I want 1 .grd and 1 .grc files for all 600 bin files, do you know a way to combine all these files ?




Use ICS Mapserver to Import IC2 from Planet

No problem my friend, the forum was made to help each other.

For sure you can combine all the files in one using ICS Mapserver.

- Lauch ICS and convert all bin files into IC2.
- Click on "Disk Option Menu" >> Create Blank Matrix >> From Files list
- Select "16 bit files" and then select all ic2 files you have converted
- Enter Blank Matrix Name and make sure you have selected "16 bit files" again
-Now the Matrix is blank and it does not contain any data, it contains only the Geographic Extends of the new Matrix file.
-To fill the blank matrix, we need to select all files again using the next steps
- Click on "Disk Option Menu" >> Insert Files, then select the blank Matrix we have just made
- Make sure thay "Src + Dst" is not selected
- Click on "select Files" and select all converted ic2 files again
- click Now on "Insert" and you are done!

The new Matrix is now an IC2 file and contains all the converted files and you can follow all the procedures posted before!

You can try global mapper to convert SRTM to geo. But you must install ATDI plugin first. You can get both of installer here.

Then use ICS to convert ASCII into IC2 or GEO
(Arcview needs to load 3d & spacial analyst first )

OK here is the trick:
First Launch Arcview 3.1 with 3d & spatial analyst loaded
click on left bar >> Scripts
Paste the hgt2grd script
Click on "Compile" Icon
now click on the Left Bar again >> Views
A new view "view1" appears
Now click back on the hgt2grd script windows
Now click on "Run" Icon
A customize windows appears >> close it and you are done!

Hello Here are the correct Steps

if you have one DEM file
-Esri ascii >> ic2
-Rename .ic2 to .geo
-Use .geo in ICS telecom

if you have multiple DEM files
-Esri ascii files >> ic2 files
-Merge ic2 files into one ic2 file using :
Create blank Matrix >> from files
Insert files >> Select all ic2 files into the blank ic2 file
-Rename .ic2 to .geo
-Use .geo in ICS telecom

If you plan to use ics telecom and you need to have the DEM and IMG Map in the same resolution you can use ICS Mapserver to Resample the DEM or the .IMG Map to the same resolution.
-Open Countour Treatment Menu >> Open Disk Session
-Choose the DEM or IMG file
-Click on Resample Icon
-choose Resampling factor

Tools Needed:
1-ArcView 3.1 With 3d Analyst Extension (Installer is Attached PM for P@ss...)
2- ICS Mapserver


1- First We launch ArcView 3.1 and load 3D analyst by clicking on "File >> Extensions" and selecting 3d Analyst
2- Zoom to building View
3- Click on 'View' Menu >> New Theme >> Select Polygon
4- Select a filename >> OK
5- Use the "Draw Polygon" from the Drawing Bar and start drawing random buildings footprint.
6- Click on the left panel to select the new building layer we have just made
7- Click on "Theme" menu then on "Table"
8- Now click on "Table" menu then on "Start Editing" and assign a random height for each polygon, this number will be used to extrude the building to a certain Height
9- Now Click on "Table" Save edits
10-Now click on Layer again then on "Theme" >> "convert to 3D Shapefile"
11-Select 'Get Z value from attributes' to get the height you have just assigned for each building
12- Now load the new 3D Shapefile and click on "theme" >> Convert to Grid
13- Now load the new Grid file
14- Now select the new grid layer and click on file >> Export Data source and select ASCII raster
15- Launch ICS and click on "Import/Export" >> Import IC2 From >> ASCII Grid and you are done!

I have attached all files needed in this tutorial!
