VoLTE is not just about costs and spectral efficiency. It enables operators to provide the better voice quality and lower latency that are the key requirements of GSMA’s rich communication services (RCS), and that will enable them to support the chat, voice, and video applications envisaged by the recently launched joyn project. In this context, VoLTE is a necessary complement to video services and applications that have started to dominate the traffic load and that promise to generate an increasing portion of revenues.
