The object of this paper is to discuss the use and testing of Ethernet services in telecommunications transmission networks, with the emphasis on the commissioning through to maintenance phases of network deployment and use. These phases are generally taken to be:
• Commissioning
• Acceptance testing
• Service turn-up/hand-over
• Network maintenance/troubleshooting
Recommendation ITU-T Y.1564 defines a test methodology that may be used in ssessing the proper configuration and performance of an Ethernet network to deliver Ethernet-based services. This outof-service test methodology was created so that service providers may have a standard way of measuring the performance of Ethernet-based services.
