Have you tried already Global Mapper or ArcGIS? Also a mapping tool but I don't know if better than mapinfo

Have a look at Manifold System http://www.manifold.net/ it is very cost effective compared to MapInfo and ArcGIS. I have heard some GIS people say that it is very good. I had a play with a fixed version a long time ago but never had time to really learn it (and the fix was not perfect). 32 and 64 bit versions, plus it supports Nvidia CUDA processing for some functions.

just doing a seach there are some torrents out there for ver 8 etc ... might be time to have another look at this ..

aaah your right , it need mapinfo . ( or just mapbasic i am not sure ) you cant then try Atol or planet both planning tool but a light on the pc . they are already here in the forum.

I though map info is the best with consideration of many tools supported (*.MBX). Why looking for another way ?! :)

Here is the list of GIS applications. I think you can do everything and more in ESRI ArcGIS but you must keep in mind that addins/plugins for RF related are usually developed for MapInfo as it is used throughout RF community.

You can try QGIS (qgis.org). It's free and can replace most of Mapinfo tasks. I like it :)
