It has been demonstrated that inter-site
synchronization has the potential to significantly increase
capacity in cellular networks based on GSM and EDGE. In
combination with frequency reuse and fractional loading,
synchronization reduces interference through intelligent
allocation of frequency hopping parameters. This paper discusses
frequency-planning strategies for synchronized GSM and EDGE
networks. In addition, field trial results in a mature GSM market
are presented. In particular, FLP 1/1 with synchronization is
compared with an optimized ad-hoc plan in terms of voice quality
and number of call drops.
