Anyone have experience with monitoring of RF spectrum?
I need it for project of Government Bureau for Communications.

Which manufacturers produce that type of equipment? (RF sensors,....)
Any documentation, tutorials, real projects or any info will be of help.

Thanks

Hi,

Most known manufacturer for such type of equipment (spectrum analyzers, power meters software etc.) is Rohde & schwarz. For the start, visit their website and look for spectrum monitoring, Argus and Romes (tools that are used in fixed and mobile monitoring stations). Second important manufacturer is Agilent and they have good solution based on distributed sensor system that performs TOA analysis. If you are in US, TCI with their Scorpion software could be interested to you. Others, that are less present but do have products are Thales (French and popular in smaller number of European countries) and Tadiran (Israeli and more army focused but also present in this area). If you are looking for spectrum analyzers and handheld solution to use in the bureau outside of predefined system you can check Tektronix for spectrum analyzers and Narda for handheld (backpack) units.
Real projects could not be shared on-line because it goes in details for every specific country but if you are working with the Burea, you can always visit neighboring regulators and ask them for their experience. You should check first ITU Spectrum Monitoring handbook and SM series of recommendations. After that, don't buy only R&S or equipment in confirmation with SM series since most of jobs could be finished mostly by not so expensive solutions.
Also, pay attention what you can do with the results - you need to store them somewhere, to produce reports, to provide support to other procedures in the Bureau...

Dear dekili,

Thanks for the detailed analysis. It's been very useful.
Please share ITU Spectrum Monitoring handbook and SM series of recommendations documents if you have it.

Because I live in Europe my question is: Is there any statistical information on the internet for equipment used by regulators in other neighboring countries? I have info about our Bureau and some other countries, but I need more details about as many as possible countries so that I can carry out statistical analysis in order to prepare a presentation. On the basis of such information I will be able to work on a technical solution.

Thanks

No, there is no statistics on Internet. As much as I can know, R&S is most popular and they are number 1 in most of European countries. Second is Agilent, Thales is present is France and French speaking countries while Tadiran is present in Israel and not so much in Europe. I will try to upload in the next few days ITU recommendations and other materials. If you cannot access them in your Bureau - ask for the access since you will have to have them!
Cheers

Yes, R&S is No 1 in spectrum monitoring, with their extremely good systems, both fixed and vehicle mounted.
Since most of these systems are basically SA (spectrum analyzers) + software + directional antennas, think that most instrument vendors can offer something like that. Think Anritsu had also something like that, and Tektronix has such system, but more oriented towards military use than civilian.
As for the ITU Spectrum Monitoring Handbook, here's the link to 2002. release:
http://www.4shared.com/file/6xxxDAnz/ITU_SM.html

Later if I have time, I will post some info on the autonomous monitoring station that I had some experience with.

http://www.itu.int/rec/R-REC-SM/en

All of them are related to spectrum monitoring. Even in the ITU Spectrum Monitoring Handbook from 2002.you will find list of recommendationsthat should be followed. On the link above you will find latest revisions of those recommendations.
