Hi ,

Does anyone have any experience of the advantages of Electrical tilts over Mechanical tilts?

Thanks

1). Mechanical tilt:- in this you bend the antenna mechanically
The major lobe will become heart shaped in case of larger tilts. and lead to unwanted distribution of signal in uncontrollable manner.

2). Electrical tilt:- this is done with the help of phase shifters.
The phase of the feed(voltage) to the dipoles is changed further leading to change in the radiation pattern in a better manner.

Effects:-
Mechanical Tilt Causes:
Beam Peak to Tilt Below Horizon
Back Lobe to Tilt Above Horizon

Electrical Tilt Causes:
Beam peak to tilt below horizon
Back lobe to tilt below horizon
All the pattern tilts

It's free available here: RWTH Aachen (http://www.comnets.rwth-aachen.de/publications/complete-lists/abstracts/2002/fokepahe-3g2002.html) (10 second Google :p)

whats the difference between tilting in 2g & umts or 3g?

Hi MRO3,

First of all let me notify, that generally 2G means "GSM" and 3G means "UMTS".

Different tilting settings in 2G/3G systems have to deal with the antenna and band specifications.

In GSM you could have a small tilt and thereby have big overlapping zones between cells.
In UMTS this should be avoided as the more overlap you create the more the more noise will be created in the neighboring cell (sort of cannibalism).

UMTS is very sensible to downtilt for interference control. Be careful not to downtilt too much because there will be coverage loss (increase of access failure). It will be the optimization task to find the "correct" tilt value.

E-tilt has better sidelobes and backlobes control while Mechanical has less control over the backlobes.

Electrical tilts can also be done remotely or from the bts manager. Mechanical means you have to access the antenna..:D

But only if you have installed a RET system ;)
