Hi Guys,
Maybe you can share what is the major difference between this two technologies. You can share anything that cross your mind.
Let me start first.
1) Difference frequency band. 2G occupy 900MHz and 1800 MHz.while 3G 2100 MHz
2) Signalling, Interface and Architecture difference
I know there are plenty out there, but just want to know what cross your mind when somebody from non-technical background ask this question.

Data services.....2G is mainly voice data ..3G like R99,HSDPA,HSPA+ and LTE....data services

Also Bandwidth
GSM has 200 kHz
WCDMA has 5000khz

Fast power control
2G has 2Hz
3G has 1500Hz

3G has hard hand over, soft hand over, and softer handover
2G only has hard hand over

Hi
let me share my little knowledge
1)3G came as data requirment came more or requirment over air interface and mobility came strong .
2)with 200Khz in 2G and with Modulation techinques it is not possible to cop up with Higher data rates.

The penentration point of view:
2g cover lager footprint while 3g cover less footprint this is due to their operation frequency

Hi luganomu
But there is a catch ie the RX senstivity of BTS in GSM 2G is -110 and in case of 3G its -126 also the RX sensivity or 2G GSm phones according GSM spec of rel 3gpp is -102 db while 3G is -114 db
So footprint cannot be just assumed on frequency, also you can operate 3G on 900 band .
But the service provdided at longer distance may vary due to Power ! ie which is a main limiting factor in 3G.

3G employs a fat pipe, which improves delivery to the user. Also, a wideband channel is more resilient to fading. Also, 3G allows us BW-Power trade off. Hence, it is possible to receive signal levels lower than the ambient noise (interference).

- 3G provides high speed packet data rate in several Mbps
- 3G uses wideband vs narrow band of 2g gsm
- 3G use the spread spectrum vs gsm 2g tdma

Main advantage: spectrum efficiency (same for 3G to 4G)
Main disadvantage: range (same for 1G to 2G)

[QUOTE=arban;106239]Hi Guys,
major difference is bandwidth which carries veery large information and it uses coding techniqiues mostly..

Can Any body share some documents??
Here is a document on 2G and 3G cellular networks and their evolution and comparison:

In your question, i think u mentioned to GSM (2G) and WCDMA (3G). Somebody from non-technical background can distinguish them as:
- 2G: supports voice and low data rate services (CS services)
- 3G: suppots many kinds of services from Voice, video call, video streaming... to high speed services...

3G has dynamic cell breathing which allowed coverage to shrink (Smaller) depends on the user numbers & it will correlate with its EC/NO. While 2G coverage is Fixed, nomather how many user were utillized at the same time.

Here are 2G(GSM) vs 3G(WCDMA) comparison :
1. Access Methods
GSM: TDMA
WCDMA: CDMA
2. Bandwidth per Carrier
GSM: 200 khz
WCDMA: 5 Mhz
3. Frequency Reused Factor
GSM: 7
WCDMA: 1
4. Packet Data
GSM: Timeslot based scheduling (GPRS)
WCDMA: Load based on Packet Scheduling
5. Frequency Diversity
GSM: Frequency Hopping
WCDMA: Multipath Diversity dengan Rake Receiver
6. Frequency Power Control
GSM: <2 Hz
WCDMA: 1500 Hz
7. Downlink Transmit Diversity
GSM: Not Standarized
WCDMA: Standarized
hopefully it will help you

nice thread. if we have to talk about the network architecture, the RNC in 3G will take the place of a BSC in 2G. 2G is solely circuit switched but 3G tends to packet switched network

Nice comparison. Just to add:
- 3G supports simultaneous multiple sessions
- 3G exploits a wideband channel, whose signal BW is greater than the coherent channel BW. So, you have more resilience to frequency selective fading in 3G.
- The fatpipe of 3G offers better/varied QoS.

GSM can have multiple sessions
