Compare Half Rate and Full Rate in GSM?
Dear my friends,
I have a question about using HR and FR in GSM.
I've read that when using HR, GSM have double capacity and MS use 30% less energy (wiki), but audio quality become worse.
I dont know how bad HR affect to Rxquality and MOS if used?
And if we use HR to expand capacity, we can use less TRX per cell. So whether the interference (C/I) becomes better in this case?
Thanks for your replies

HR will affect MOS surely
But I don't think you could decrease number of TRXs as Normally network planning is based on Full Rate study
after we use HR in case of congestion

Re: Compare Half Rate and Full Rate in GSM?
Dear,
For sure the MOS quality is bad in HR because the HR coding output is half FR
As pointed out by justdream, HR is a fast & ship solution for congestion relief, but it should not be used 100% because quality became worse and worse
Best regards,

Certainly if you have full resource to planning.
But if you have UMTS900 co-exist, your GSM900 resource will be cut off (no GSM1800 in this case). Assume that UMTS900 and GSM900 have the same coverage, so we can get better MOS from UMTS900, and measuring equipment will rarely connect to GSM900.
So, at dense city with high traffic, can we always enable HR to maximize capacity of network and reduce used TRX to minimize the interference? Between the bad feeling when enable HR and the bad feeling when have high interference, which is better case?
How about user's feeling when use HR? It clearly affect to sound that user can heard, or just affect to MOS?

MOS is to measure what actually perceived by the customer. So impact in MOS affects to the sound that user can heard. you can refer wiki for MOS definition.
However small variations may not be identified to a normal person on one go
