PCTEL Scanner VS Cell-Phone Scanning

Does it matter if we use Cellphones with external Antennas for scanning instead of separate PCTEL Scanner? What will be drawbacks? Thanks

scanners have greater scanning capability than the scanning mode of phones.
for example, in parallel 3G and 2G scanning, multiple-carrier 3G scanning etc
