You're probably more interested in G.704.

Anyways, let me take this opportunity to show some of the fellow young engineers where and how to search for those standards.

E1 is the European format for digital transmission similar to the North American T1 (E1 carries signals at 2 Mbps and the T1 carries signals at 1.544 Mbps).

The ITU-T coordinates standards for telecommunications on behalf of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The standardization work of ITU dates back to 1865. It became a United Nations specialized agency in 1947, which created the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT) in 1956. It was renamed ITU-T in 1993. The international standards that are produced by the ITU-T are referred to as "Recommendations", as they become mandatory only when adopted as part of a national law. Recommendations have names like X.500, where X is the series and 500 is an identifying number.

The ITU-T Standarizartion Sector home page is:

http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/index.html

and the Recommendations are located here:

http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/publications/recs.html

There you can look for the “G” section (Transmission systems and media, digital systems and networks):

http://www.itu.int/itu-t/recommendations/index.aspx?ser=G

There you’ll find what you are looking for

A nice summary is posted here:
