Dear FT members,
Can anyone describe what are the main purposes for using scanners instead of using MS while performing drivetests ???

Any1 having clear idea about scanners please share.

Why do we use scanners?? what data can be collected using scanners??
Differences between scanners & ms, etc...

Thanks in advance.

To easy identify missing neighbors(extremely useful in WCDMA) , to see competitors levels , to see foreign operators freq's and levels at border area , to identify interferer , pilot pollution and etc.

MS's + Scanner is best way

In normal working network your MS is measuring (descrambling) only codes of neighbour cells which are defined by radio planner (network configuration). They are broadcasted in serving cell system information.. But also the best radio planner can do a mistake (forgot one or more possible neigbour cell jumps). That non-listed cell makes so called "missing neighbour" interference because for example you are driving near that nodeB and your active conection doesn't jump to that cell but still remains on last one.. your MS doesn't "see" that cell..
With scanner you can easy notice also that cell because it doesn't measure dependant of the network configuration

So I see big help of scanner mostly in the optimization of neighbour relations..

of course there is much more . some scanners supports CW measurements (useful for site acquisition and tuning of coverage prediction models), cell coverage verifications, cell search performance improvements (synchronization channels) and much deeper CPICH measurements..

that was the most simple explanation I can do ;)

1-Scanner is more precise than MS because it signal processing is more faster than MS .
2-The amount of information that scanner collect in the same time MS collect is far more those it means more accurate measuring.
3-sensitivity for scanner is much high than MS so may be some measurement MS can not read it but scanner it read this can help when you have Technology that require radio measurement in low value as i saw it in 3G all measurement below -110 dBm.
4-and scanner is multi-Technology as for mobile is limited./
Hope this is clear
