hi everybody,

as you can see Im totally new in this forum and I need your help. I ve never done Transmition Planning before and I need to start learning so that I can apply for a job. What tools do I need to check LOS for links? Do I need digital maps of the terrain? Which programs would be helpful in my situtation?

Thank you for replying. I tried to find pathloss here but all links require me to be of high reputation and some files require passwords. Unfortunately I am lost :)

I will also check for global mapper to see what it does...

All help is welcome :)

I ll try my best to learn without getting on your nerves and at the same time to pass on that knowledge to the next guy like me :)...

I managed to download Pathloss 5 but AVG thinks it has a virus... still checking that...

I also read about "medicine" which is sometimes hard to find! What do we do in that case?

I also installed Global Mapper and now I must learn what to do with it :)

Any tutorials are welcome :)

My advice is to start with this http://www.cplus.org/rmw/english1.html .
It's not very user friendly, but have good "how-to" and it's free.
Just read carefully, if you want search rm yahoo groups and start planing :)

The summary of tool functions http://www.cplus.org/rmw/rme.html .
You can find free dtm maps here: http://www.finetopix.com/showthread.php?t=3733&highlight=tremalnike (http://www.finetopix.com/showthread.php?t=3733&highlight=tremalnike)

Ok, you didn`t check LoS ever befor...Would you check LoS for Short Haul or Long Haul Radio Links? Would you check it with planning software on a laptop?
I think, LOS Checks covers usually short radio hops in urban or rural areas. You can use a binocular to check the LoS from existing buildings or towers. You must verifiy the antenna heigh, coordinates and free short range field aof the antenna.

To calculate long haul radio links is more than paper work. Do you have ever heard about path surveys?:confused:

hi dear friend ,

i would suggest to use the Aircom suite....Connect tool can help you in doing microwave links planning , while the direct is dedicated for fixed , IP , ATM and PDH/SDH transmission network planning...

Hi

"Better" or "easier" is the key issue of engineer
you must know the tools as your hand
if you metrication tool, then you will become a king in your mind of course.

gooood luck!

I havent done LOS checks before.. althouh I have some experience with MW links all the design was done by other people. I was mainly involved in the installation and commisioning. How can you check LOS for a hop length of 40km if you dont do it on paper? (using digital maps etc?). Yes for short haul it is possible to use binoculars but for long haul?

Aircom sounds good if you consider that the latest trend is to have hybrid or pure IP MW links... I guess the software is available around here..

Definetely practice makes perfect and it important to know your tools. But for a beginner "easier" is usually a good way to start. "better" usually means more complicated and that requires a lot of time for someone to become expert. Of course that is the ultimate goal and hopefully I can get there in time.

Again thank you for your valuable input!
