Nokia Patents the Vibrating Tattoo

By: David Ng | 21st Mar 2012

In the future, you could be alerted to an incoming phone call or message by a subtle vibration in a magnetic tattoo etched into your skin, if a Nokia patent is ever commercialised. The company has filed a patent that describes a method of spraying a ferromagnetic material onto the skin in a pattern and then pairing it with a mobile device - probably over Bluetooth. As the material will respond to tiny electrical charges it can be made to vibrate on demand, and the Nokia patent suggests that different forms of vibration could indicate different messages. "Examples of... applications may be low battery indication, received message, received call, calendar alert, change of profile, eg based on timing, change of time zone, or any other," the patent filing wrote. An alternative use could be to use the tattoo as a form of password to access services such as laptop passwords that would only unlock when the user is close to the device. Temporary versions of the tattoos could be replacements for ink stamps that are often applied at nightclubs or for voting registration.
