Once you have drawn your ruler line in Goolge Earth, in the ruler tool window use the save option to save the vector data to your Places. Then export this out of Google Earth as .kmz or .kml format (right click, save place as), open the .kmz or .kml in Global Mapper and then use Export Vector Format in MapInfo TAB/MAP format. Then open in MapInfo. Just did it and it worked OK.

Hope that helps, Stan.

For LOS you can use GE Elevation Profile as described here:

Yes, it's possible:
1. Draw a line with a ruler
2. Save it as 'something'
3. Right click on this 'something' and save as 'something.kml' (NOT .kmz)
4. Edit this 'something.kml'
5. You will see sth like this in the editor:
[...]
<coordinates>
22.76550073239243,49.77423331595823,334.4862835626704 22.76756186789372,49.77408068097798,333.4529629553094
</coordinates>
[..]
6. The structure is: lon_start,lat_start,height_start lon_end,lat_end,height_end
7. Replace height_start, height_end with your desired heights (HATs=relative to ground)
8. Save the file and open it with GE
9. Right click on this 'something' in the 'Places' panel
10. Go to 'properties' -> 'Altitude', choose 'relative to ground' and optionally check 'Extend path to ground'. Done.

Note: I haven't checked the height scale works properly. The other question is about Earth's curvature...
