Poll:Rules for password protected files.

for more and more complaints received about password protected files, I think it's time to setup some rules for password protected files.

2010-08-17：

Since we have closed this poll, and more than 56% choice agree to put password in signature, and many compliants about request thanks/rep before giving password.
so here is the new rules about passwords protected materials:

1. put password in your signature or in this thread: http://www.finetopix.com/showthread.php?t=7611
no request pm, no request add reputation/thanks.

2.put clear descriptions for your docs/softwares/attachments.
at least let others understand what's your attachments contains.

3.search same/similar materials before post it
repeated posts will be deleted without warning and the poster will lost 50 credits.

4. threads/posts do not obey the above rules will be deleted without warning and please do not reply on those threads.

new suggestions are welcome.

I suggest the password to be something like that:
The attached file name_member name

Example:
I attached rar file called: GSMKPI
My member name is: justdream

So the rar password is: GSMKPI_justdream

and users can add reputation after downloading the file, if they find it useful :hug:

I think the password must be shared in the signature, and there must be a provision that when a person download something, he should be redirected to the reputation page stating that "please add to reputation, if you find the post useful." This will encourage more and more forum members to add to the reputation for a post he downloads. I think "Man" loves convenience. When a person download something, he feels "lazy" again to add to the reputation, but due to this automatic redirection, may be he will add to the reputation for the downloaded post.........Think over it......:)

I would like to give a practical example,

For the last post I posted, I shared the password there itself, there were 19 views for the post, but only two added to my reputation,:L, but if there was a automatic redirection to the reputation page might be this figure would have increase to 12 or more....Please let me know what my other friends have to say......

Do we really need passwords?

I managed to download few files I can not open. Inacom HSUPA.exe for example.
Beside thanks - I am not giving reputation if poster takes 5 credits from me to download,
and then I am stuck with useless encripted file.

Even worse: on few occasions I found out some old irrelevant articles.
Like 2002 scientific paper on UTRAN - after 8 years, it is quite obsolete....
And results are not usable in HSPA world.

I could do it: just google around, pull down some academic stuff from 10 years ago,
post it and collect points. But it is unfair to WFA collegues to spend credits,
spend time on clicking, and just to erase files.

As I newcommer here, I guess you already tried it all.

I think it is better to give files without passwords but as you know sometimes you spent a lot of time to post any think without at least a thank!!

So, I prefer to provide password after "Thanks" then if member saw the material is nice he then can provide the reputation.

When i was new comer I load some doc & some guys download it but they didn't give any reputation & thanks.From that on-wards i hav protected by password.so i amn't favour 4 default password.

for some files are closed to copyrighted material, it is wise to encrypt those files before uploading.
password via PM is secure way to make this forum protected

but since many member are not wise to say THANKS for useful material, it is wise to automatic add rep for every links that are downloaded

and then it is also wise to add negative reputation for every links that are cheating, giving nice title for something old/useless

- Conditional download (5 credit/ download) needs to be removed.
The sharing and downloading needs to Encourage in order to better utlize the forum.

Setting user-defined password should be remained to make the members think what they are doing and which things are needed. it could be a good correspondence between levels of members. Every time someone wants to get the files he/she should do something for that instead of clicking and smile. We'll share for someone who is looking for, not for collectors.
Reputations are a part of encouragement but forgotten "sometimes".

In some cases after you have requested for the pwd and said Thanks, pswd will not be supplied until you add Rep!

And what happens after 1 week and you do not say Thanks and add Rep?
This is apublic forum I think rules for protecting posted files should be relaxed.
If and when I see a good post, I will always add Thanks and Rep.
You do not need to ask or silently blackmail to earn reps!

Instead of helping each other this forum is turning into a market with greed people searching for reputation. For me, the situation is good enough at this moment. I think that i have made a balance between shared and downloaded items. And of course there will be always people crying for justice :L when they only download and give nothing to the others.

I have set my default pass in the specified topic and not going to put in the signature.
I have the right to make a choice, do I?

I don't mind giving thanks and rep for a password. But as many people know, a lot of times a password is never sent. So there has to be a mechanism to remove the reputation you have given when this occurs. Currently the system will not let you do this (you can do it for Thanks, but that is not really as important).

Or an easy way of reporting this to a moderator and if a particular user does this all the time, they can be warned and then banned.

Maybe it's even better to stop allowing psw protected files.
Best thing is to hide links until you've pressed thanx/add reputation whatever.

The thing is, why are there psw anyway. As soon as the psw is once known, the files/docs are in the field and spread around different forums no matter what the contents is.


My statement stays: Together we can have it all.
But if you really like it, buy it to support the vendor(s).
(and yes I've bought a major package in the past :eek: although it was the wrong one looking afterwards :rolleyes:)

Perhaps the poster should provide a synopsis of the file content, mentioning clearly whether the file type is a presentation or research publication or coursematerial...

Better not to have passwords. In case some files do need a password, it is better to rely on the PM way. So u can release the same to only required people.
Passwords for documents, installers is un-necessary.
For meds we can use the PM way. :D

Most of the file attachment are confidential and need to be protected. I love the idea of PM to get password.
I think the person that download the attachment will PM if he think he is very much interested in the file.
But i don't buy the idea of forcing guy to give reputation before pass is send to them.

This is my little opinion.

That´s the reason for password protection and the credit system, if you think something is interesting you have to contribute to the Forum with Ideas, Docs and soon in order to get enough credits for the information that you want. If the file is an Old anyway you need that information.
