=========================================================

As the number of subscribers grow, the network operators may eventually get capacity constraints, since the frequency spectrum is limited. Therefore, the need for techniques which improve the sector capacity will be of increasing importance in the near future.

One of these techniques is frequency hopping, which is included in the GSM Specifications. Random frequency hopping introduces two kinds of diversity which make the transmission less sensitive to fading and interference.

This document presents an evaluation of one of the consequences of frequency hopping: the reduced sensitivity to interference, called interference diversity. The impact of interference diversity on the transmission quality is emphasized. Transmission link performance with and without interference diversity is studied, and the question in focus is: What
quality in terms of Frame Erasure Rate (FER) can be expected on a transmission link with a certain C/I ratio?
