Hi all,

i'm looking for a way to enable the AMR-WB (G722.2) codec on any WCDMA devices.

Thanks in advance for your responses

Hi!

IMHO, you can not. Terminals either support it, or not.
Even worse: some claims to support, but do it only on application layer,
not for normal speech.

I guess the only way to do it is to get firmware upgrade for particular phone.
Or wait few years for WB-AMR to become usable.
Or just ignore it, it will come too late to be used. Future is LTE+IMS some powerpoints claim.

Thanks s52d, i'm agree with you.
I think that a lot of device support this codec, but the feature is disabled.
According to this news (http://newsroom.orange.co.uk/2009/12/31/orange-to-launch-mobile-hd-voice-in-2010-a-new-standard-for-the-uk-telecoms-industry/), Orange UK will use this feature soon, and i'm pretty sure
that we can already use it with compatible devices.

Yes, some new terminal support WB-AMR.

Orange already trialed it in Kishinev/Moldova I heard,
and It has been in use during Barcelona show.

On the other hand, I heard rumors about terminals not supporting it in BSS.
So, user who manage to have other party with WB-AMR phone will notice
performance degradation after 3g to 2g handover.

If it does not work on 2g and 3g, then it might get quite negative responses: people
might remember performance degradation, not initial HD-voice..

So my status is: call me when we have 15% of terminals in the network, and when
you can demonstrate 3g/2g handover in WB-AMR.

I think that Network Operators will have two kind of terminals : Standard ones and "HD ready" ones.
Firstly, because "HD voice" depend on the codec but also on the microphone/speaker quality.
Secondly, you're right : some terminals will have issues on some radio equipment suppliers, or on the BSS for instance.
(But the HD availability could also be limited to the 3G Network coverage.)

I remember seeing AMR WB trial about 3 years ago, about 2 years ago my operator introduced AMR WB and had a whole promotion about how clear it sounds etc.
So, it's been around for a while, but how can I see which phones support it? Anyone have a list?
